Robin Kahrs
Robin Kahrs has been a volunteer with LA County Animal Care and Control with the Agoura Animal Shelter for almost 10 years, and serves as the Foundation liaison to Agoura.
During Robin's tenure at the Agoura shelter she has been instrumental in implementing many proactive programs designed to increase animal enrichment and comfort. Robin also succeeded in bringing the first Real Room to an LA County Shelter entirely through donations and volunteer labor. This added another element of comfort for the dogs by giving them respite from the kennels and an area for "meet and greets" for potential adopters. Robin, as the lead dog volunteer at the Agoura Animal Shelter, has also created a very successful training program for new volunteers entering the shelter system which has resulted in well trained volunteers who are able to assist staff and customers and work safely with the animals they are handling. Robin was volunteer of the year for LA County Animal Care and Control in 2004.
Robin has also been instrumental in helping every shelter participate in Big Sunday, a day long event that brings thousands of volunteers to help with projects throughout Southern California. Robin started by bringing Big Sunday to Agoura where she oversaw the donation and improvements to a storage container which now serves as the "Real Life Room" to assess how animals will behave in a true home environment. From there, she helped bring Big Sunday to Lancaster in 2009; to Carson and Balwin Park in 2010; and to Castaic and Downey in 2011; leaving in her wave wonderful shelter improvements and increased morale among both staff and volunteers.
In addition to her duties as board member for the Animal Care Foundation, Robin is currently President of Friends of Homeless Animals, a 501(c)3 non profit that funds facility improvements and well-being of animals and is also President of Malibu Pet Companions, a 501(c)3 non-profit that funds medical care for homeless pets at the Agoura Animal Shelter. Past experiences include many positions held on PTA boards over a 10 year period and being Founder and President of Advocates for Special Kids, an advocacy and support group for parents of special needs children, a group that just celebrated it's 20th anniversary and continues to assist parents who have children with disabilities.
Robin has been married for 30 years to her husband Ken and is mother to two grown children, Chris and Andrew, mother-in-law to Jennie, Chris' wife, and a proud new grandmother to Kingston. Robin is also mama to three well-loved pups, Augie, Sophie, and Sweet Pea. Numerous foster animals from puppies to post-op animals have also temporarily joined the Kahrs family over the last 10 years. Robin is passionate about her volunteer work with LA County Animal Care and Control and feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to help so many precious homeless pets transition through the shelter environment into loving homes.
